The menstrual cycle is a normal process happening to nearly all
women from puberty till menopause. However, there are still a lot of myths or
inaccurate ideas that revolve around menstruation- maybe because it many women
feel shy and uncomfortable when talking about it. Here is a list of myths and
find out how many of these have you believed?
Myth 1: You should not exercise or do strenuous activities while
menstruating and a bed rest is a must.
Menstruation
is a normal function of the body, so there is no reason to avoid exercise or
strenuous activities during the period. In fact, health experts advised you to
exercise during menstrual cycle to help reduce cramping because it increases
the supply of oxygen flowing to the muscles.
Myth 2: You can’t get pregnant while menstruating.
Don’t count
on it! You CAN get pregnant during the period. Once inside you, sperm can live for
3 to 4 days while ovulation can occur during or right after the bleeding phase.
It’s totally
wrong. A nice warm bath can do relieve cramps and premenstrual tension.
Myth 4: You can’t go swimming during the period.
This myth is
an old one, perhaps it started before internal devices like tampons were
popular or it could be a fear of cramps while swimming or the blood could
contaminate the swimming pool. Go ahead and have fun.
Myth 5: Eating sour foods will worsen menstrual cramps or lengthen
the period.
There is no
evidence showing the link between eating sour foods and menstrual cramps, but
it is essential to maintain a healthy diet during your period and remember to
eat a lot of brown bread, beans and yogurt.
Myth 6: Girls shouldn’t use tampons during their first periods.
This is
another complete falsehood. Just make sure you read the instructions and
warnings carefully and insert the tampon correctly. Tampons shouldn’t cause
discomfort or pain.
Myth 7: Your period should last for exactly one week.
The time of
menstrual period varies from person to person. It’s perfect for a period to
last between 3 to 7 days.
