Sweat itself is virtually odorless. Based on a recent study, sweat
stinks only when bacteria from the body are mixed the sweat, giving out the
unpleasant smell. Some other reasons for body odor are mentioned below.
Stress
When
stressed, you are driven to sweat extensively. A hormone called cortisol is
activated in your body and then combines with bacteria causing your sweat to
smell.
Clothing
Synthetic
fibers like polyester, nylon tend to make your smell worse because instead of helping
move the sweat away from bacteria, they keep it trapped on the skin. Therefore,
it is better to use natural fabrics which allow the skin to breath, resulting
in a better evaporation of sweat.
Perfumes
Perfumes
which do not have anti- bacterial properties can make the problem worse. In
these cases, stinky bacteria are encouraged to grow rising the risk of body
odor.
Pills
Many
medications have increased sweating or body odor as an adverse effect. The
chemicals present in the pills can give your body a foul smell.
Missing Nutrients
Scientists
found that people who lack in magnesium, a nutrient found chiefly in leafy
greens had a stronger body odor than those supplied enough.
Low- Carb Diet
It is proved
that people who diet excessively can develop a strong body odor apparent in
sweat. When the body is deficient in nutrients, it burns its own fat and
proteins causing a “fishy” smell.
Sweets
Eating too
many sweets not only does increase the size of your waistline but also have great
impact on your body odor. It can cause an overgrowth of yeast which in turn
converts sugar into alcohol emitting a bad smell.
Bathroom habits
Studies have
shown that when one holds his or her urine or feces for a long time, toxins
released by the digestive system may seep through the pores giving your body a
foul smell.
Seasonings
Most of us
love foods with a lot of spices and herbs. But it is another reason for making
sweat smell.
